Canadian Olympic Speed Skater Clings to Faith in Winter Games

Canadian speed skater Danielle Wotherspoon-Greg will be marching into the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremonies in Sochi, Russia today.

Though the Olympics are exciting for each contestant, she and her support team are not new to the games. Danielle follows the footsteps of her older brother, speed skating legend Jeremy Wotherspoon who holds the current 500 m world record.

Wotherspoon-Greg was raised in Red Deer, Alberta with a strong support network of family and teachers where her faith in God was nurtured attending Ecole Secondaire Notre Dame High School. She has since moved south to attend Calgary University and has found community being involved in a non-denominational church congregation.

In an interview with the Catholic Register Danielle says, "The biggest thing for me is having that faith. It just helps knowing that there is always someone with you and watching you. For me that is just a huge thing and it can also be very comforting in sport."

Dear God, sometimes my "testing" season seems so long. Please give me courage to endure until the end. Help me not to bail! You said you would bless me for hanging in there - I will not give up on you or your promises. You are with me and will see me through this trial.
